“The most important thing you can do as a young person is to become an expert at something. To be skilled at whatever it is you are desirous of pursuing.”

Robert F. Smith the GOAT said this quote, and I love it. I try to get all my young folks to become specialists at something. In fact, someone asked me how I pick mentees, and I actually believe it’s based on this. I see them as experts in something, and I want to help them accelerate that expertise. However, their expertise was obvious when I met them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Don’t go from job to job, industry to industry, year after year. Market dynamics dictate one is paid in direct proportion to the value they bring to the market. The best person at anything can make millions. Focus on being excellent at something. This doesn’t mean you can’t have outside interests. For example, I’m focused on being an excellent investor and have been focused for 20 years. However, I still want to be a teacher, run a nonprofit and learn how to play instruments.  Take this advice for all my virtual mentees out there.

@ericdcampbell just wrote about this in his last post, and it’s true. I’ve been teaching athletes how to apply that same skillset that got them to the league into other industries as they transition…and it works. Keep building people! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
